Sustainability Roundtable with Race Directors from Four Major Marathons

2026/4/3

A sustainability roundtable article featuring race directors from four major marathons has been published on ASUENE Media, the media platform of ASUENE Inc., the Sustainability Official Partner of Tokyo Marathon 2026.

This roundtable was made possible following Tokyo Marathon’s collaboration with ASUENE Inc. on the pre-event measurement of GHG emissions for Tokyo Marathon 2026. It also marked the first time in Japan that a marathon event disclosed emissions for the entire event across Scope 1–3.

In the article, race directors from four of the seven World Marathon Majors—Yasuhiro Oshima of the Tokyo Marathon (March), Wayne Larden of the Sydney Marathon (August), Mark Milde of the Berlin Marathon (September), and Carey Pinkowski of the Chicago Marathon (October), listed in calendar order—share their thoughts on climate change and marathon event management.
The discussion highlights how GHG measurement can serve as a foundation for decision-making in race operations, how organizers are addressing emissions associated with participant travel, specific initiatives introduced by each race, and how marathons can help inspire broader behavioral change across society.
