Tokyo Marathon is celebrating a tremendous accomplishment: its 20th Anniversary. It owes this to the assistance of runners, volunteers, people along the course, and countless others in every race since the first Tokyo Marathon was held in 2007.
For this commemorative race, Tokyo Marathon 2027 will be carrying out various initiatives that embody the marathon's concept, "The Day We Unite," with the assistance not only of runners and volunteers but also of supporters and the many other people who collaborate in the holding of the marathon.
■Japan's largest marathon! The marathon field size will be increased to a record 40,000 runners
Tokyo Marathon 2027 has increased the field size from 39,000 to 40,000 runners to allow even more people to participate.

■The biggest grand prize of any of the Abbott World Marathon Majors
The prize money awarded to the men's and women's Marathon Elite Athlete champions has been increased. The world's top athletes will be competing in a thrilling race as they vie for the $170,000 champion's prize, the largest ever in the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM).
■A new marathon (42.195 km) para-athlete division and entry categories for people with disabilities
A new para-athlete division has been created to heighten the appeal of marathon elite racing by people with disabilities. In conjunction with this, new entry categories have been created for people with disabilities, further promoting their participation in sports. Due to these changes, the 10.7km Race has been superseded by the marathon.
■Creation of a new Duo Team division
To create a society in which everyone can enjoy running, we began a trial introduction of Duo Team at Tokyo Marathon 2025. Starting with Tokyo Marathon 2027, Duo Team will become an official division and will be seeking interested runners. In the Duo Team division, runners work in two-person teams of one buggy rider and one pusher, aiming for the finish line together.

■Tokyo Marathon EXPO 2027
The Tokyo Marathon EXPO 2027 aims to provide participants with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the Tokyo Marathon experience and to enjoy the vibrant city of Tokyo. Attendees will have the chance to explore the latest sports gear and apparel, various demonstrations showcased by our official partners.
Applications for general exhibitors will open at 2:00 p.m. JST on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
