Competition Rules
  1. (1) The races will be conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of the World Athletics, JAAF and the Race Organizer.
    World Athletics Road Race Label Regulations also applies to the Tokyo Marathon, which has been certified by the World Athletics as a Elite Platinum Label.
    Doping control will be conducted abiding to World Athletics Anti-Doping Regulations.
  2. (2) World Para Athletics Rules and Regulations and the competition rules of the Tokyo Marathon applies to the wheelchair marathon.
    Doping control will be conducted abiding to World Para Athletics Anti-Doping Regulations.
Cut-off Times & Start Times
  • (1) Marathon:
    Marathon: 7 hours (9:10 a.m - Start, 4:10 p.m. - Finish)
    Wheelchair: 2 hours and 10 minutes (9:05 a.m. - Start, 11:15 a.m. - Finish)
  • (2) 10.7km Race:
    10.7km: 2 hours (9:10 a.m. - Start, 11:10 a.m. - Finish)
    Wheelchair: 40 minutes (9:05 a.m. - Start, 9:45 a.m. - Finish)
  • * A Cut-off Times will be set for the purpose of traffic, security, and competition management.
  • * Runners who lag excessively behind the cut-off time pace may be asked to leave the course at anytime.

Eligibility

Those who fulfill the following conditions, and whose participation is approved by the organizer:

* Includes those who have transferred or been granted the right through events conducted by the organizer for the Tokyo Marathon.

  1. (1) Marathon: Over 19 years of age on the race day (Field size: 38,500)

    1. 1-1)General (Male, Female and Non-binary)

      • - Runner who is capable of finishing the race within 6 hours and 30 minutes.
      • * Includes runners from "RUN as ONE - Tokyo Marathon 2026 (general)".
      • * Runners with disabilities who find it difficult to run without support should run with a guide runner (Guide/support animals are not allowed).
    2. 1-2)Semi-Elite (Male, Female)

      • - Athlete who meets the requirements set forth by the RUN as ONE - Tokyo Marathon 2026 "Semi-Elite".
      • * Runners with disabilities who find it difficult to run without support should run with a guide runner (Guide/support animals are not allowed.).
    3. 1-3)Elite (Male, Female) * Entry will begin in December.

      • - Athlete who registered with the JAAF in fiscal 2025 and meets the requirements set forth by the organizer.
      • - Invited Athlete: domestic and international runner nominated by the organizer and/or the JAAF.
    4. 1-4)Wheelchair (Male, Female and Non-binary)

      • - Wheelchair user who is capable of finishing the race within 2 hours and 10 minutes using a racing wheelchair.
      • - Wheelchair user who has proof of disabilities.
    5. 1-5)Wheelchair Elite (Male, Female) *Entry will begin in December.

      • - Athlete registered with the JPA in fiscal 2025, and to be registered with the IPC in fiscal 2026 and meet the following requirements.
        Athlete who are in the sport classes T53 - 54 of World Para Athletics Classification and has Class Status R or C.
        Athlete who has the following record in the tournament of the World Para Athletics certified races:
         1 hour and 50 minutes or under (Male).
         2 hours or under (Female).
      • - Invited Athlete:National and international athlete nominated by the organizer and/or JPA.
  2. (2) 10.7km Race: Over 16 years of age on the race day(Field size: 500)

    1. 2-1)Junior & Youth (Male, Female and Non-binary)

      • - Runner between 16 to 18 years of age on the race day (runners born between March 2, 2007 and March 1, 2010 are eligible).
      • - Runner who is capable of finishing the race within 1 hours and 45 minutes.
      • * This include those who are selected separately by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government under the projects related to the Great East Japan Earthquake Recovery Support.
    2. 2-2)Visually Impaired (Male, Female and Non-binary)

      • - Runner who is capable of finishing the race within 1 hour and 45 minutes.
      • - Runner who has proof of disabilities.
      • * Runner who find it difficult to run without support is allowed to run with a guide runner. (Guide/support animals are not allowed.)
    3. 2-3)Intellectually Impaired (Male, Female and Non-binary)

      • - Runner who is capable of finishing the race within 1 hour and 45 minutes.
      • - Runner who has proof of disabilities.
      • * Runner who find it difficult to run without support is allowed to run with a guide runner. (Guide/support animals are not allowed.)
    4. 2-4)Organ Transplant (Male, Female and Non-binary)

      • - Runner who is capable of finishing the race within 1 hour and 45 minutes.
      • - Runner who has proof of disabilities or medical certificate, etc. to prove to be a transplant.
      • * Only organ transplant and bone marrow transplant are acceptable for the Transplant category.
    5. 2-5) Wheelchair (Male, Female and Non-binary)

      • - Wheelchair user who is capable of finishing the race within 40 minutes using a racing wheelchair.
      • - Wheelchair user who has proof of disabilities.

* Racing wheelchair requirements are specified in the latest "Rules and Regulations" set forth by the World Para Athletics.

    • - Once the entry exceeds the field size, the entry will be chosen by random drawing.

      • 3-1) ONE TOKYO Premium Member Entry and ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member Entry

        If the entry exceeds the field size of 3,000, a drawing will be conducted.

          * This is for runners who entered through the domestic site and residents of Tokyo (at the time of entry)

      • 3-3) Charity Runner Entry
        Donors (including corporations) who have made a donation of at least the amount set by the donating business (organization) and who want to run as a charity runner are eligible.(Field size:5,000)

        * Those who want to run as a charity runners will not be allowed to enter any other entries under any circumstances.

      • 3-4) Semi-Elite Entry The selection will be based on the target number system (Field size: 280).

        * The qualification time for entry will be set so that the number of entry is around the field size.

  • (4) Payment:
    • - Selected runners and entry ticket holders including the Tokyo Marathon deferred entry, must complete the event fee payment by the deadline.
      The entry will be void if payment is not received by the deadline.
    • * Payment only available by credit card or by a specified online financial service.
    • * Receipt will not be issued; If you require a receipt of the payment, please refer to the belonging credit card company.
  • (5) Other:
    • - If the spot open after the selection, the additional draw will be conducted for "ONE TOKYO Premium Member" and/or "ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member" as of October 31, 2025.
    • - Separate application will be necessary for a guide runner.(Scheduled to be in December)

    • 1-1) Elite, Elite Wheelchair, Semi-Elite, Wheelchair will start at the gun time and the record will be based on gun (gross) time.
    • 1-2) Records for the other entrants will be based on both the gun time and the net time.
  • (2) 10.7km Race
    • 2-1) Records for the 10.7km and 10.7 km Wheelchair will be based on both the gun time and the net time.
Award

    • 1-1) Overall: the top three Men and Women.
    • 1-2) Wheelchair : the top three Men and Women.
    • 1-3) RUN as ONE - Tokyo Marathon 2026 "Wild Card Award": the top three Men and Women in the Semi-Elite division.
    • 1-4) Next Generation Athlete Award 2026: the top Men and Women belonging to The Inter-University Athletics Union of Japan.
    • * All awards for the above category are based on gun (gross) time.

    • * If you start outside the designated corral, you will not be eligible for an award.
Prize

For both the marathon and wheelchair marathon, the prize will be determined separately based on the results of the race.

  1. (1) The event is subject to cancellation if a cancellation request is received from respective authorities and agencies.
  2. (2) The event is subject to cancellation due to natural disaster or in a situation in which delivering a safe event is difficult.

  2. (2) This event shall adhere to all national laws and regulations.

  4. (4) Duo Team participation is going to be implemented on a trial basis in this race.
  5. (5) Please take all possible precautions to ensure that you are in good physical condition before participating,
    such as practicing well and undergoing a medical examination in advance.
  6. (6) This outlined information is set forth for the Tokyo Marathon 2026.

Event Regulations

The regulations with which the Tokyo Marathon 2026 applicants and participating runners must comply are established in the Event Regulations.

  • 1. This event will be carried out while abiding to all domestic laws and regulations.
  • 2. In addition to the Event Regulations, the event will adhere to the all other rules and regulations set forth by the event organizer.
  • 3. Except in the event of intentional or gross negligence, the organizer shall not be held in any way responsible for any of the following.
    • (1) Illness, an epidemic and/or accidents (except emergency treatment).
    • (2) Loss and/or damage of personal property.
    • (3) Late arrival to the race due to trouble with public transportation and/or poor road conditions.
  • 4. In order to execute safe event, the event organizer will enforce traffic control in the vicinity of the event.
  • 5. Runners are required to follow the instructions of the event organizer. Otherwise, will be disqualified from the participation in the event.
  • 6.To prevent accidents, the following are prohibited because of the danger of contact with runners and falls.
    • (1) To stop suddenly or change their path at the start of the race.
    • (2) To change your path or suddenly stop on the course to take photos or respond to roadside cheering.
    • (3) To block the sounds around you by using earphones or headphones.
  • 7. The course is certified by the JAAF, AIMS and World Athletics.
    We will not accept any claims against the course measurement or the distance based on personal devices, such as, GPS tracking device.
    Also, you may be disqualified for missing timing mat record and/or if short-cut is discovered.
  • 8. Depending on external condition and influence, the timing may be affected. Note that there may be missing records due to environmental influence, and they are by no means 100% guaranteed that they will record all times.
  • 9. The race will feature gates with closing times for traffic, security, and race operation reasons. Runners who fail to pass through the gates by their designated closing time will be asked to stop the race. In addition, runners who are exceedingly late to other checkpoints may also be asked to stop the race at the discretion of the judges.
    • * Please see the RUNNER HANDBOOK for times and locations of gates.
  • 10. The organizers reserve the right to publish and control the images, photographs, articles, records, location information, runners' names, ages, sex, and addresses (country, prefecture, or ward) that include the runners' appearance during the race on TV, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, etc.
    The organizer may provide such information to the Tokyo Marathon 2024 co-sponsors, managing organization, operation support, supporting organizations, official Partners, as well as to various media for the purpose of compiling record rankings, etc., and the runners hereby consent to such use.
  • 11. The event organizer, in recognition of the importance of protecting personal data, abides to all laws and ordinances concerning the protection of personal data, and adheres to the event organizer's privacy policy when handling personal data.
  • 12. Medical first aid services provided at the Tokyo Marathon will be as follows.
    • 12-1) Medical stations will be open only during the period when each medical station is open.
      • * Start medical station will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. (provisional)
      • * Medical stations on the course will be open from the time the first runner passes until approximately 15 minutes after the last runner passes.
      • * The period of opening hours are provisional and subject to change. The closing time may also change depending on usage.
    • 12-2) The scope of medical care at the medical station in the finish area is limited to the general regulation area and runners along the runner flow line designated by the organizer.
      • * General regulation areas and runner traffic lines will be published in the Runner Handbook.
    • 12-3) The organizer will take appropriate measures to deal with injuries and illnesses during the event to the extent possible on site.
    • 12-4) If necessary, the patient will be transported to a hospital by ambulance or rescue vehicle. (Medical fees at the hospital will be borne by the patient.)
      Please note that if the patient refuses to be transported to a hospital, we may ask for the patient's consent in writing as a record of the patient's "refusal to be transported based on the patient's own will".
    • 12-5) Compensation may be paid for injuries or illnesses that occur while participating in the event.
      • * A medical certificate (original) from a doctor will be required. Please note that this is not an insurance to cover medical expenses (treatment expenses).
    • 12-6) If the patient is transported to a hospital, we will be requesting the hospital to provide information on medical records.
    • 12-7) During first aid responses, lifesaving activities will be given the highest priority and may be handled by the opposite sex.
      (Such as use of AED, chest compressions, and treatment at first aid stations.)

Race Regulations

The event organizer will not permit the participation in the event who is in violation of the event regulations, laws/regulations, or public order and morals, as well as the prohibitions specified in the following examples 1 through 12.
If any of these are applicable to the participant, the event organizer will not allow the participant to join the race or prevent the participant from continuing the race, even after the start of the event.
Any objection against its judgement will not be accepted.

  • 1. Dressed in clothing or wearing a gear that may be dangerous, hurtful or cause other runners to fall; and/or running with the whole part of the face covered.
  • 2. Dressed inappropriately for a sports event or in clothing that is unpleasant to other participants or spectators.
  • 3. Clothing for the purpose of political or religious assertions or propaganda, as well as advertising.
  • 4. Clothing for the purpose of promoting or advertising an individual name, a specific region or an organization that the event organizer does not acknowledge.
  • 5. Use of articles that could cause other participants to mistakenly recognize as a starting signal and cause confusion to the race management, or use of a devices with strong sound volume that may disturb others.
  • 6. Acts that causes a delay to the start of the event, such as, dancing, performance, playing instruments, standing near the start or finish lines, or in the streets along the course.
  • 7. Soliciting monetary contributions, signatures, etc.
  • 8. Preventing pedestrians from crossing the course or obstructing the passage of emergency vehicles at certain points, when and where they are allowed to do so.
  • 9. Obstructing the race by failing to follow the instructions by the race officials and referees.
  • 10. Bringing a guide runner not approved by the event organizer. Also, guide/support animal is not allowed.
  • 11. Changing clothes in undesignated locations and/or urinating or defecating at places other than toilet facilities.
  • 12. Occurrence of affair other than those listed in numbers 1 through 11 that the event organizer determine inappropriate for the event.

Entry Regulations

Applicants who cannot observe the below regulations and all other regulations/rules set forth by the event organizer will be rejected in the entrant selection (or disqualified even after the event fee payment/race participation), and no refund will be made. Moreover, applicants will never be allowed to participate in our future races.

  • 1. When you complete your entry, the "My Entry" page will be created automatically. Entry status, entry result, event fee payment, and issuance of Runner Handbook and Finisher Certificate will be available on the "My Entry". Note, the "My Entry" page created for this event is scheduled to be deleted in late May 2026.
  • 2. A duplicate application for the race entry by the same applicant is prohibited. Also duplicate entry for the ONE TOKYO Premium Member Entry, ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member Entry, General Entry and Semi-Elite Entry is not allowed. If duplicate entry is discovered, the entry will be voided and the paid event fee will not be refunded.
    In case a chargeback is executed due to a claim to your credit card company, all benefits obtained, including entry tickets from ONE TOKYO Premium Member Entry, ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member Entry, General Entry, the Second Draw, and next event entry tickets won in virtual events, will be invalidated retroactively from the beginning of the annual membership.
  • 3. ONE TOKYO three consecutive unsuccessful member challenge is also eligible to ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member.
    The drawing for ONE TOKYO GLOBAL member will be conducted starting from "Tokyo Marathon 2028."
    For the Tokyo Marathon 2028, applicants must enter as a ONE TOKYO GLOBAL Member and must have been unsuccessful in three consecutive applications for the Tokyo Marathon 2025, 2026 and 2027.
    • * Even if you are a ONE TOKYO GLOBAL member, you will not be eligible for the drawing if you have not made a simple entry as a ONE TOKYO GLOBAL member (the three most recent races and Tokyo Marathon 2028).
    • * You must remain a ONE TOKYO GLOBAL member continuously for the three most recent races and the race you want to apply for.
  • 4. False name, date of birth, sex, nationality, residing address, and race records are strictly prohibited. Please carefully check your registered information for they are not allowed to be changed or canceled after submission, excluding the items that can be modified on the "My Entry".
  • 5. The organizer will not be held responsible for any late entry due to error caused by certain PCs, browsers, operating systems and/or poor Internet connectivity.
  • 6. Email delivery check for the registered email address will not be conducted. Note, the organizer will not be responsible for any inconvenience or loss due to trouble with the device (malfunction), system/email setting, failure to receive email and/or change in email address.
    • * Please make sure to update your email address through the My Entry in case of address change. Depending on the situation, the My Entry may not be accessible. In that case, please directly contact the entry desk.
  • 7. Entry desk and administration office will not accept any questions regarding entry status and/or entry result. Please refer to the "My Entry" page for your entry result status.
  • 8. Applicants who fail to pay the event fee and other required fee by the designated date will have their entries cancelled automatically, and will not be allowed to participate in the race. Putting the right of entry or the race bib for sale or auction is strictly prohibited. Any participant guilty of breaching this rule will be disqualified, and the event fee (including donation) will not be refunded.
  • 9. Entry through a travel agencies not approved by the event organizer are not allowed. If discovered, the entry will be voided and the event fee (including donation) will not be refunded.
  • 10. No one other than the applicant themselves (substitute runner, transfer of rights) is allowed to run in the race. Runners must register in person with photo ID during the three-day registration period prior to the race (during runner registration hours). If you do not register during this period, you will be unable to participate in the race.
  • 11. For security and to prevent unauthorized entries, we'll take measures such as requiring runners to wear wristbands at the time of packet pick up (to be worn until the finish line) and/or to register facial photos.
    • * Please kindly note that a smartphone may be required depending on the operation.
    • * Be sure to check the details in the Runner Handbook
    The Tokyo Marathon recommends carrying smartphones and transportation IC cards in case the race is cancelled during the race.
  • 12. A baggage check-in fee will apply starting with Tokyo Marathon 2026.
    If you wish to check your bags during the race, please apply when applying for the race. Please note that baggage storage cannot be changed after applying.
    * Except in the event of intentional or gross negligence, the organizer shall not be held in any way responsible for any loss or damage.
  • 13. Entry Gate, and Starting Corral cannot be requested for change for any reasons, and no exceptions accepted.
  • 14. If the decision is made to cancel the marathon, event fees may be refunded and participants may have their entries deferred, depending on the timing of the decision and the reason for the cancellation. Details are as follows.
    Payment will only be available by the payment processing service specified by the organizer, and handling fees, etc., will be deducted from the refund amount.
    • * Please note that an account with the payment processing service will be required. We appreciate your understanding.
    • 14-1. A refund will be issued if the reason for the cancellation of the event is as indicated below.
      • 14-1.1. Cancellation due to snowstorm, flood due to heavy rain, building destruction due to strong wind, lightning strike, tornado, and/or fire along or near the course, causing course blockage.
      • 14-1.2. In addition to 14-1.1. above, cancellation due to a physical phenomenon that would make it impossible to guarantee safe running on the course, resulting in police authorities issuing a request that the event be canceled.
      • 14-1.3. Cancellation due to earthquake within Japan.
      • 14-1.4. Cancellation due to the J-ALERT
    • 14-2. If the event is canceled for any of the reasons in 14-1. above, refunding and deferred entry will be performed as indicated below.
      • 14-2.1. If the event is canceled by September 1, 2025.
      •  14-2.1.1. 70% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-2.1.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-2.2. If the event is canceled by December 1, 2025.
      •  14-2.2.1. 50% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-2.2.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-2.3. If the event is canceled by February 1, 2026.
      •  14-2.3.1. 20% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-2.3.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-2.4. If the event is canceled between February 2, 2026, and the starting gun time (9:05 a.m.) on March 1, 2026.
      •  14-2.4.1. 100% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-2.4.2. Entries will not be deferred.
    • 14-3. If a cancellation request is received from a government agency, or if the event is canceled for a reason not indicated in 14-1. above (including cancellation due to war/terrorism and/or communicable disease), the following will apply.
      • 14-3.1. If the event is canceled by September 1, 2025.
      •  14-3.1.1. 70% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-3.1.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-3.2. If the event is canceled by December 1, 2025.
      •  14-3.2.1. 50% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-3.2.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-3.3. If the event is canceled by February 1, 2026.
      •  14-3.3.1. 20% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-3.3.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-3.4. If the event is canceled between February 2 and February 14, 2026.
      •  14-3.4.1. 10% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-3.4.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-3.5. If the event is canceled between February 15 and February 21, 2026.
      •  14-3.5.1. 5% of the subject amount will be refunded.
      •  14-3.5.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
      • 14-3.6. If the event is canceled between February 22, 2026, and the starting gun time (9:05 a.m.) on March 1, 2026.
      •  14-3.6.1. The event fee will not be refunded.
      •  14-3.6.2. Entries will be deferred to Tokyo Marathon 2027 or Tokyo Marathon 2028.
  • 15. Those who would like to cancel the race due to runner's own pregnancy or childbirth will only be transferred to the future race if they agree to the conditions and precautions for transferring their rights.
    In addition to the procedures for transferring rights, the following conditions and precautions will be announced. Please contact the Entry Center by Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

    • Conditions to be transferred
    • ① Documents about pregnancy or childbirth are required to be submitted.
    • ② The event fee and other expenses for Tokyo Marathon 2026 are not refunded. Also, you are required to pay them again at the event you're transferred.
    • ③ To be transferred is limited to one time only, for any reason. Also, you're not allowed to change the event you are transferred
    • ④ The event to be transferred is either Tokyo Marathon 2027, 2028 or 2029.
    • * To be transferred due to illness or injury is not acceptable.
  • 16. Violation of the rules, and withdrawal of the entry at the participants' discretion do not qualify for a refund. There is no entry deferral or special treatment for a future event.(Except for pregnancy or childbirth)
    Excess or duplicate event fee payments will be refunded, minus the handling fee.
