With a history spanning over 10 years, thanks to the increase in the prize amount and other elements, we have assembled our best-ever lineup of invited athletes in the Tokyo Marathon 2026. In both men’s and women’s fields, the athletes ranked high in the AbbottWMM Series XVII Leaderboards and the ranking of the International Paralympic Committee have made an entry to the Tokyo Marathon 2026, and we are thrilled and expecting a tightly contested and interesting race development. First of all, there are eleven men in total from Japan and abroad, and of the total, seven athletes are from overseas, including HUG, Marcel (Switzerland), the absolute champion, top-ranked in both rankings mentioned above. There are also WEIR, David (England), veteran born in 1979 and ranked third in the AbbottWMM Leaderboards, PLAT, Jetze and SCHIPPER, Geert (Netherland) ranked fourth and fifth, respectively in the same ranking and both with a proven track record in paratriathlon, XINGCHUAN, Luo, the runner-up in the Tokyo Marathon 2025 and JIN, Hua, the Silver Medalist in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, both from China and RIZZO, Samuel (Australia), a rising star in the marathon. In the marathon, HUG’s achievements are by far outstanding though I also think that the things have changed. In the 1,500m at the New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships held in India last fall, HUG finished in fourth place, while JIN and XINGCHUAN finished in first place and second place, respectively. China has a deep pool of athletes and many of them possess great agility and quickness, and furthermore, recently, it seems they have been focusing on strengthening their team by making new racers (wheelchairs for competition). Among others, JIN and XINGCHUAN have evolved quickly and are promising talents. WEIR is a quadruple crown winner in both marathon and track events at the London 2012 Paralympic Games held in his home city, and has continued to perform at the top level in recent years. It is going to be his first time participating in the Tokyo Marathon, and I wonder how he will perform there. Both athletes from the Netherlands are energetic and tenacious. The Tokyo Marathon course starts with a downhill that builds up speed, followed by a flat stretch, so there might be a lot of catching up or passing in the second half. It is going to be a nail-biting race until the final moment. From Japan, we have invited four athletes including SUZUKI, Tomoki (Toyota Motor), winner of the Tokyo Marathon 2025 as well as Japanese record holder (1:18:37), WATANABE, Sho (TOPPAN), high-ranking winner in the Tokyo Marathon 2025, NISHIDA, Hiroki (Baccarat Pacific) and KISHIZAWA, Hiroki (Hitachi Solutions). In recent years, SUZUKI has increased participation in AbbottWMM and last year he showed his strength by consistently reaching the podium and was ranked second, the highest ever in the AbbottWMM Series Leaderboards. It seems he has been adjusting peaking to be basically once in four years to be in line with paralympic games, and with a view to the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games to be held in two years, this year is going to be the timing to gradually build up his condition, so I would like to keep an eye on how the race goes. Under such circumstances, I look forward to seeing how the powerful Chinese two athletes will make a race against HUG and WEIR and how SUZUKI, the top Japanese athlete, will take on. Moreover, I would be so happy if other Japanese athletes such as KISHIZAWA, the young prospect, hang on to the leading group and make the race even more exciting. For the men's field, the number of the general entries has increased, too. There are many young athletes who have an interest in the Tokyo Marathon as a place to take on against the world's top athletes, and I am eager to help liven this up as well. Place60 Similar to the men’s field, for the women’s field, the top athletes ranked highly in two lists. There are nine athletes from overseas, and the race will likely revolve around SCARONI, Susannah (USA) and DEBRUNNER Catherine (Switzerland) who have been fiercely competing in recent marathons. Last year, DEBRUNNER won her first victory in the Tokyo Marathon 2025 where she competed for the first time with SCARONI who was runner-up, while they both ran a fantastic race, setting new competition records. In the AbbottWMM Series Leaderboards, SCARONI who recorded many victories in the latter half of the Series was ranked first and DEBRUNNER was ranked second. Although DEBRUNNER belongs to the T53 classification which has a more severe impairment compared to SCARONI, each stroke is powerful and DEBRUNNER has great agility and showed overwhelming strength, achieving five crown victories in the track events at the World Para Athletics Championships held last fall. It will be intriguing to see how these two athletes will adjust themselves to the Tokyo Marathon 2026, which is the first race of this season, develop the race and start the year 2026. Against these two athletes, I wonder how the talented athletes like SCHAER, Manuela (Switzerland) who won the Tokyo Marathon four times before as well as DE ROZARIO, Madison (Australia), the Silver Medalist of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will compete. Furthermore, as a new trend in the women’s field, new athletes are also gaining strength. In addition to RAINBOW-COOPER Eden (Great Britain) who demonstrated strength consistently, ranked fourth in the AbbottWMM Series Leaderboards, I look forward to watching the evolution of DE SOUZA, Vanessa (Brazil) and EACHUS, Patricia (Switzerland). From Japan, we invited NAKAMINE, Tsubasa (TES Engineering), the Japanese record holder (1:35:50) and TSUCHIDA, Wakako (will raise), the veteran. NAKAMINE has been making steady progress and won the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2025 last year by overtaking TSUCHIDA right before the finish line. TSUCHIDA also has high adaptability, so we hope that these two athletes will show us a race where they take on strong top athletes from overseas. Subject to the weather conditions on race day, both the men’s and women’s races may be competitive with an aggressive approach from the first half, and in such cases there will be high expectations for breaking world and Japanese records. To give that an extra push, we have set up two “bonus points” at the 10km mark again this year. One of them is the “AbbottWMM Wheelchair Bonus Points”, which rewards leading racers in men’s and women’s divisions with bonus points (8 points) for reaching the 10km mark. Another one is the “Split Time Bonus”, which rewards three racers with prize money for reaching the 10km mark with pace faster than the current marathon records. Although the marathon records were broken(*) just last year for both men and women, with such talented racers, and given that the early stage of the Tokyo Marathon course is mainly downhill, I am really looking forward to seeing some new records broken. (* Men: 1:19:14/Women: 1:35:56) The overwhelming sense of speed is what makes wheelchair racing so appealing. Get ready for a thrilling battle at the highest level, with a record number of world-class racers.
